Fabrício Werdum: "I have the weapons to win this GP”

This week Strikeforce has officially announced a heavyweight GP which promises to mix things on MMA’s market. Chosen to participate of the GP, Fabrício Werdum is training hard and motivated to conquest this tournament. Recovered from the injury that put him off the rings for six months, the world champion of Jiu-Jitsu and champion of ADCC is sharpen his conditioning to get 100% o February 12th, when he’ll face Alistair Overeem on the first phase of the GP. “I’ll finish him again, you can bet on it”, promises Werdum, who might confront, on the second step of the tournament, the Russian Fedor Emelianenko, a guy he has submitted last year. Despite cheering for Big Foot, the Brazilian who currently lives on the United States wants to give the Russian a rematch. “To Fedor I’ll concede this rematch happily, because I like him and he deserves this rematch”, said Werdum, on the exclusive interview that you check below.
How are the trainings going? Are you 100% recovered from your injury?
From the injury I’m totally recovered, but I still ain’t on my best physically. I’m training enough to get it back. Everyday I go to Huntington Beach to train with Rafael (Cordeiro). I train with him from 11am to 1pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I have a special training with Jason Miller and Mark Muñoz. We do a sparring and train Wrestling with Muñoz.
You’ll face Alistair Overeem, a guy you’ve submitted in Pride, in 2006, on the fisrt round of the tournament. What are your expectations for this fight?
The expectations are as high as they can get. Being trained I can fight anyone. I’ve changed my mind. Before I entered there thinking about my opponent, now I get there thinking of me, how I’ll get to him and what I can do. We both evolved a lot. Overeem evolved a lot on the floor and he’s stronger and more experienced. When we fought in 2006, I pretend to do it for a while, fooled him a bit (laughs). Now I’m training a lot my bang but it still isn’t good for me to bang with him. The guy has just won K-1, so I’ll try to go for the ground, even because he was training his bang a lot and he didn’t have enough time to improve his ground game for this fight with me.
Will this be your game plan?
The fight will be very tactic, it’ll be like the one of 2006 and I’ll catch him again, you can bet on it. I’ll beat him with my game plan and smartness. The longer it gets, the better it is for be because he has a background that proves he’s not resistant. I’ll tire him up, bring him to the ground and finish the fight.
On the same side of the key Strikeforce matched Fedor Emelianenko and Antônio Big Foot, two guys you’ve beaten. What is your bet for this fight?
Fedor is hungry for a win, because he has just lost to me and he wants to win again. But I’ve talked to Big Foot and he also wants to win pretty bad. Between two heavyweights, anything can happen, there’s o favorite. Big Foot is very tough, can handle much and has heavy hands.
Technically, your side of the key is stronger, is where the favorites are. Why do you think that Strikeforce matched the fights this way?
I believe they did it that way so that they can sell many pay-per-view subscriptions on the semifinals and on the finale. They’re betting I’ll beat Overeem and that Fedor beats Big Foot, because they know everybody wants that rematch. So, they want to guarantee a good semifinal so that they sell it out and they’re betting on it. Who doesn’t want to watch a rematch like this one?
On the other side of the key there’s Sergei Kharitonov against Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett facing Brett Rogers. How do you think these fights with end like?
Kharitonov wins, because he’ll go for it the entire time. Arlovski is good when he’s attacking, but when he’s attacked he backs up and I bet the Russian will beat him. On the bout between Barnett and Rogers I’m 100% Barnett because once he put Rogers on the ground, he’ll turn him into a turtle (laughs).
Both Kharitoov and Arlovski has beaten you. Do you think about fighting them again?
What I think about is a rematch with Fedor. I wouldn’t like to give Overeem this rematch, I’m just fighting because the event matched this fight. To Fedor I’ll give this rematch happily, because I like him and he deserves this rematch. But first I have to think about how I’ll beat Overeem so that rematch can happen.
You’ve fought on the greatest MMA events of the world, but you’ve never conquered a belt. How are you facing this opportunity?
It’d be a dream come true wining this GP. I’ve fought only one GP, which was Pride’s, in 2006, when I beat Overeem on the first phase and then lost to Minotauro on the second one. Back than I lacked experience, but today, being trained and more experienced, I have the weapons to win this GP.

Fabricio Werdum : Je possède les armes pour gagner ce Grand Prix

Le StrikeForce a officiellement annoncé cette semaine un Grand Prix Poids Lourds qui promet de faire bouger les choses sur le marché du MMA. Retenu pour participer au G.P., Fabricio Werdum s'entraîne dur et motivé pour conquérir ce tournoi. Guéri d'une blessure qui l'a tenu éloigné des rings pendant 6 mois, le champion du monde de Jiu Jitsu et champion de l'ADCC peaufine son conditionnement afin d'être à 100% le 12 février, lorsqu'il affrontera Alistair Overeem au premier tour du G.P. "Je le finaliserai à nouveau, vous pouvez parier là dessus", promet Werdum, qui pourrait se confronter, au deuxième tour du tournoi, au Russe Fédor Emilianenko, un homme qu'il a soumis l'année dernière. Bien qu'il soutienne Big Foot, le Brésilien, qui vit actuellement aux Etats-Unis, veut accorder une revanche au Russe. "J'accorderai cette revanche à Fédor avec joie, parce que je l'aime bien et qu'il la mérite", déclara Werdum dans l'interview exclusive ci-dessous.
- Comment se passent les entraînements ? Avez-vous récupéré à 100% de votre blessure ?
- Je suis totalement guéri de cette blessure, mais je ne suis pas encore au mieux physiquement. Je m'entraîne suffisamment pour récupérer. Tous les jours je vais à Huntington Beach pour m'entraîner avec Rafael (Cordeiro). Je m'entraîne avec lui de 11h00 du matin jusqu'à 1h00 de l'après midi tous les lundis, mercredis et vendredis; J'ai un entraînement particulier avec Jason Miller et Mark Muñoz. Nous faisons du sparring et nous nous entraînons à la lutte avec Muñoz.
- Vous allez affronter Alistair Overeem, un homme que vous avez soumis au Pride en 2006 au premier tour du tournoi. Comment envisagez-vous ce combat ?
- Je l'envisage de niveau aussi élevé qu'il est possible. Etant entraîné je peux affronter n'importe qui. J'ai changé ma façon de penser. Autrefois j'y allais en pensant à mon adversaire, aujourd'hui j'y vais en pensant à moi-même, comment je vais lui faire face et ce que je peux faire. Nous avons tous les deux beaucoup évolué. Overrem a beaucoup évolué au sol et il est plus fort et a beaucoup d'expérience. Lorsque nous avons combattu en 2006, sur un instant, je l'ai complètement mystifié (rires). Maintenant je m'entraîne beaucoup aux frappes mais ce n'est pas encore bon pour moi d'échanger des coups avec lui. Il vient juste de gagner le K-1, aussi j'essaierai d'aller au sol, parce qu'il s'est beaucoup entraîné à frapper et n'a pas eu suffisamment de temps pour améliorer son jeu sol pour ce combat contre moi.
- Est-ce que ce sera votre game plan ?
- Ce combat sera très tactique, ce sera comme celui de 2006 et je l'attraperai à nouveau, vous pouvez parier là-dessus. Je le battrai avec mon game plan et mon intelligence. Plus cela durera, meilleur ce sera, car ses antécédents prouvent qu'il n'est pas résistant. Je l'userai, l'amènerai au sol et mettrai fin au combat.
- Dans la même poule, Fédor Emilianenko et Antonio Big Foot Silva vont s'affronter, deux hommes que vous avez battus. Quel est votre pronostic pour ce combat ?
- Fédor a faim de victoire parce qu'il vient juste de perdre contre moi et il veut à nouveau gagner. Mais j'ai discuté avec Big Foot et lui aussi il en veut méchamment. Quand deux poids lourds s'affrontent, il peut se produire n'importe quoi, il n'y a pas de favori. Big Foot est très dur, peut encaisser beaucoup et possède des mains puissantes.
- Techniquement votre poule est meilleure, et c'est là que sont les favoris. Pourquoi pensez-vous que le StrikeForce a organisé ainsi les combats ?
- Je pense qu'ils ont fait ainsi afin de vendre le plus possible d'abonnement en pay per view pour les demis finales et la finale. Ils parient sur le fait que je battrai Overeem et que Fédor battra Big Foot, parce qu'ils savent que tout le monde veut cette revanche. Donc ils veulent s'assurer d'une bonne demi finale afin de faire le plein de ventes, et c'est sur cela qu'ils parient. Qui ne voudrait pas d'une telle revanche ?
- Dans l'autre poule, il y a serguei Kharitonov contre Andrei Arlovski et Josh Barnett contre Brett Rogers. Comment voyez-vous ces combats se terminer ?
- Je vois Kharitonov gagner car il ira constamment de l'avant. Arlovski est bon quand il attaque, mais quand c'est lui qui se fait attaquer il recule, et je parie que le Russe le battra. Pour le combat entre Barnett et Rogers, je vois Barnett gagner à 100% car une fois qu'il aura amené Rogers au sol, il en fera une tortue sur le dos.
- Kharitonov et Arlovski vous ont tous les deux battu. Vous pensez à les affronter à nouveau ?
- Ce à quoi je pense c'est une revanche contre Fédor. Je ne voudrais pas accorder cette revanche à Overeem; je le combats seulement parce que l'événement l'a organisé ainsi. J'accorderai cette revanche à Fédor avec joie, parce que je l'aime bien et qu'il la mérite. Mais d'abord, il faut que je réfléchisse à comment je vais battre Overeem pour que cette revanche puisse avoir lieu.
- Vous avez combattu dans les plus grands événements du MMA dans le monde, mais vous n'avez jamais conquis de ceinture. Que ressentez-vous devant cette opportunité ?
- Ce serait un rêve devenu réalité de gagner ce G.P. Je n'ai combattu qu'à un seul G.P., au Pride en 2006, quand j'ai vaincu Overeem au premier tour, puis ai perdu contre Minotauro au second. Rétrospectivement je manquais d'expérience, mais aujourd'hui, étant entraîné et avec plus d'expérience, je possède les armes pour gagner ce G.P.
