Henderson going for the knockout against Shogun

Responsible for sharpenning the hands of the striker Dan Henderson for over three years, the Brazilian Gustavo Pugliese is confident about the success of Strikeforce’s champion on his return to the UFC, on November 19th, against Mauricio Shogun. And there’s more: he’s hoping for the fourth KO in a row.

“Both have the ability to finish it via knockout, but it’s a five rounds bout, so we don’t have to rush into it”, analyzes Gustavo, who leaded Henderson’s training to his recent wins over Fedor Emelianenko, Rafael Feijao and Renato Babalu. “Of course the goal is always the knockout. It’s what Dan is up to, he’s always going for the knockout”.

On an exclusive interview, which you check below, Pugliese talked about Hendo’s wish of having a chance at UFC’s title, whether it’s against Anderson or on the light heavyweight division, and analyzed Shogun’s Boxing skills: “on the tapes of Shogun’s last fights I noticed some flaws on his Boxing game. “Shogun’s Boxing actually is not that developed”.

What are your expectations for this fight?

I’m hoping it’s an explosive fight. Both have the ability to finish it via knockout, but it’s a five rounds bout, so we don’t have to rush into it. We don’t wanna get into a situation where Dan is tired for not having got his coups right. So, we’ll take our time during this fight.

Henderson comes from great knockout. Is his game plan to go for the knockout against Shogun?

Of course the goal is always the knockout. It’s what Dan is up to, he’s always going for the knockout, but we need to know when to attack and when to counterattack.

What is your work with Dan for this fight?

We won’t change Hendo’s style, but we’re working in some details that might surprise Shogun. It ain’t no secret the way Henderson finishes his fights, so my job, along with (Daniel) Woirin, will be to prepare him correctly to use his strongest weapon, his right hand. It becomes dangerous when we use the kicks and his left hands at a time, doing different combinations. So we’ll make him confuse so he forgets about his right hand completely. Obviously, Dan will use his Wrestling when on the clinch, it’ll be important to use different weapons to get Shogun tired.

How do you see Shogun’s Boxing skills?

On the tapes of Shogun’s last fights I noticed some flaws on his Boxing game. Shogun’s Boxing actually is not that developed. He only moves forward and tries to find the right angle ti punch his opponents. Since he’s not much technical, he walks a lot. Fighting a guy like Henderson, who knows when to counterattack, it’ll be dangerous for Shogun. But he also has a heavy hand, so we gotta be careful too.

Do you consider this fight against Shogun tougher than the one against Fedor was?

This bout against Shogun might be more dangerous than the one against Fedor, event because Shogun has an efficient Muay Thai for MMA. Against Fedor we’re just waiting for him to come and punch him. Shogun brings a great variety of coups on the stand-up game. The only advantage is that Shogun is lighter. And for a five round bout he can get tired faster. But the respect is the same.

He ran through Griffin in UFC Rio. What are your thought about that fight?

After I saw his fight against Griffin, Shogun did what he should’ve done on the first place, when he was defeated. Griffin only has a greater reach. Despite being a former UFC champion, he’s not technical and he has no KO power. He’s tough, but he’s far from being something like Dan Henderson.

UFC wondered about Anderson VS. Henderson. Is it on Dan’s plan to fight Silva?

Anderson’s always been in Dan’s plans. One of the reasons he left UFC was that Anderson didn’t want to fight him. He wants the rematch, but he’s not anxious about it. First, we gotta go through Shogun. Then we’ll see what happens. It’ll be hard for Anderson to get away from this rematch against Chael Sonnen first, anyway.

In case he bets Shogun, what would Henderson prefer: have a title shot on the middle weight or on the light heavyweight division?

Henderson proved to be competitive for having fought in three weight divisions. But he’d prefer the light heavyweight, since he doesn’t need to cut that much weight. The only fight he’d accept at the middleweight division would be Anderson.

Chargé depuis plus de 3 ans d'acérer les techniques de poings du frappeur Dan Henderson, le Brésilien Gustavo Pugliese est confiant pour un nouveau succès du champion du StrikeForce lors de son retour à l'UFC le 19 Novembre, contre Mauricio Shogun. Et il y a plus : il espère le 4ème KO d'affilée.

"Ils sont tous les deux capables d'en finir par KO, mais ce sera un combat en cinq rounds, aussi il ne faudra pas se précipiter", analyse Gustavo, qui dirigea l'entraînement de Henderson lors de ses récentes victoires contre Fedor Emilianenko, Rafael Feijao et Renato Babalu. "Bien sûr, on a toujours comme objectif un KO. C'est pour ça que Dan y va, il recherche toujours le KO".

Dans une interview exclusive ci-dessous, Pugliese évoqua le désir de Hendo d'avoir une chance pour le titre à l'UFC, que ce soit contre Anderson ou dans la catégorie des lourds-légers, et analysa les aptitudes de Shogun en boxe. "Sur les enregistrements des derniers combats de shogun, j'ai remarqué quelques failles dans sa boxe. La boxe de Shogun n'est pas si développée que ça."

- Qu'attendez-vous de ce combat ?

- J'espère un combat explosif. Ils sont tous les deux capables d'en finir par KO, mais ce sera un combat en cinq rounds, aussi il ne faudra pas se précipiter. Nous ne voulons pas nous retrouver dans une situation où Dan serait fatigué pour avoir manqué ses techniques. Aussi dans ce combat nous allons prendre notre temps.

- Henderson reste sur plusieurs grands KO. Sa stratégie contre Shogun sera-t-elle de rechercher le KO ?

- Bien sûr, on a toujours comme objectif un KO. C'est pour ça que Dan y va, il recherche toujours le KO, mais il faut savoir quand attaquer et quand contre-attaquer.

- Comment travaillez-vous avec Dan pour ce combat ?

- Nous ne changerons pas le style de Dan, mais nous travaillons des détails qui pourraient surprendre Shogun. La façon dont Dan conclut ses combat n'est un secret pour personne, aussi mon boulot avec Daniel Woirin, consistera à le préparer à utiliser correctement sa meilleure arme, sa droite. Le danger viendra lorsque nous nous servirons des coups de pieds et de sa gauche dans un temps, pour différentes combinaisons. Ainsi, nous le perturberons afin qu'il oublie complètement la droite. De toute évidence, Dan se servira de sa lutte au corps à corps, il sera très important de se servir de différentes armes pour fatiguer Shogun.

- Que pensez-vous de la boxe de Shogun ?

- Sur les enregistrements des derniers combats de shogun, j'ai remarqué quelques failles dans sa boxe. La boxe de Shogun n'est pas si développée que ça. Il ne fait qu'avancer et essaie de recherche l'angle juste pour frapper ses adversaires. Du fait qu'il n'est pas très technique, il se déplace beaucoup. Combattre un type comme Henderson, qui sait quand contre-attaquer, sera dangereux pour Shogun. Cependant il a lui aussi une frappe lourde, aussi il nous faudra également faire attention.

- Considérez-vous ce combat contre Shogun comme plus difficile que le fut celui contre Fédor ?

- Ce combat contre Shogun pourrait être plus dangereux que celui contre Fédor, car Shogun possède une Boxe Thai efficace adaptée au MMA. Contre Fédor, nous attendions juste qu'il avance pour le frapper. Shogun lui, dispose d'une grande variété de techniques dans le combat debout. Le seul avantage, c'est que Shogun est plus léger. Et dans un combat en cinq rounds, il pourrait se fatiguer plus rapidement. Mais nous le respectons tout autant.

- Il a pulvérisé Griffin à l'uFC Rio. Qu'avez-vous pensé de ce combat ?

- Quand j'ai vu le combat contre Griffin, Shogun a fait ce qu'il aurait dû faire la première fois lorsqu'il avait perdu. Le seul avantage de Griffin c'est sa plus grande allonge. Bien qu'il soit un ancien champion de l'UFC, il n'est pas technique et n'a pas de puissance pour mettre KO. Il est dur certes, mais il est loin d'être à la hauteur de Dan Henderson.

- L'UFC s'interroge à propos d'un combat de Anderson contre Henderson. Dan a-t-il pour projet de combattre Silva ?

- Anderson est toujours resté parmi les objectifs de Dan. L'une des raisons pour lesquelles il a quitté l'UFC fut qu'Anderson ne voulait pas le combattre. Il veut une revanche, mais il n'en est pas impatient. D'abord, il faudra passer Shogun. Ensuite, nous verrons ce qui arrivera. De toute façon, il sera dur pour Anderson d'éviter en premier une revanche contre Chael Sonnen.

- Dans l'hypothèse où il battrait Shogun, que préférerait Dan Henderson : combattre pour le titre des poids moyens ou celui de la catégorie des lourds-légers ?

- Henderson a prouvé sa valeur en combattant dans trois catégories de poids. Mais il préférerait combattre chez les lourds-légers car il n'aurait pas à perdre autant de poids. Le seul combat qu'il accepterait de faire dans la catégorie des poids moyens serait contre Anderson.
